Admission Requirements

Regular admission as a candidate for an associate degree, associate of applied science degree, or certificate will be granted to applicants who follow the procedures and meet the requirements under one of the following subcategories.

All students are required to complete a Health Information Waiver regarding Hepatitis B immunization.

Full time students are required to provide proof of two doses of the Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccination. Student's who attended a public school in Tennessee after July 1, 2001 for any period of time while in grades kindergarten through grade 12 are not required to provide proof of MMR immunization. Also any student who registers as part-time (less then 12 credit hours) will not be required to provide proof of MMR immunizations.

The following information is not intended to be a complete list of requirements. There are a number of different types of admission categories and all applicants are reviewed on an individual basis depending on the category of admission. A. High School Graduate (with no previous college work)

  1. Submission of a completed application for admission.
  2. Payment of a $10.00 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Submission of an official high school transcript from a state-approved or regionally accredited high school, including the date of graduation and the cumulative GPA. GPA must be included on transcripts with a graduation date of 2003 or later for Hope Scholarship eligibility.
  4. Transcripts of applicants who graduated from Tennessee public high schools in 1983 or after must include a notation that the student passed the required proficiency examination. If applicants have not passed the required proficiency test, they must submit an official GED score indicating a successful completion before being considered for regular admission.
  5. A Tennessee home-schooled student must submit an official high school transcript from an affiliated organization as defined by state law (Tenn. Code. Ann. 49-50-801) or be accompanied by certification of registration with the superintendent (Director of Schools) of the local education agency that the student would otherwise attend. Transcripts from states other than Tennessee will be evaluated on an individual basis.
  6. Submission of official ACT or SAT scores if the high school graduate is under the age of 21. Placement into appropriate English, math and reading courses will be determined by the ACT scores that are within the previous three years. SAT scores are converted to ACT scores.
  7. First time students who are 21 years of age or older and are degree-seeking will be required to take the academic placement (COMPASS) test. (This requirement does not apply to students seeking a certificate).

B. GED Recipient

  1. Submission of a completed application for admission.
  2. Payment of a $10.00 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Submission of official GED (General Equivalency Diploma) test scores indicating successful completion of the diploma.
  4. Submission of official ACT or SAT scores if the GED recipient is under 21. SAT scores are converted to ACT scores.
  5. GED recipients who are degree-seeking and are 21 years of age or older will be required to take the academic placement (COMPASS) test. (This requirement does not apply to students seeking a certificate).

C. Transfer Students

A student who is transferring to Cleveland State Community College to earn credit for an associate degree or certificate from Cleveland State Community College must follow these procedures:

  1. Submission of a completed application for admission.
  2. Payment of a $10.00 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Submission of an official high school transcript verifying graduation and date diploma conferred. (This requirement is necessary to determine compliance with the 1989 Admission Requirements).
  4. Submission of official transcripts from EACH college or university attended and from high school if the total college credit hours are less than 60. Concealment of previous college or university attendance may be cause for rejection, cancellation of admission, or dismissal of the student.
  5. The GPA of all courses taken at other schools should be as least equal to the progression standards of Cleveland State Community College. Students not meeting this criterion may be admitted on scholastic probation. A student on academic probation or suspension from another institution may be granted conditional admission to Cleveland State. Transfer students are subject to the general academic retention standards of the college which are listed on page 52 of the 2004-2005 catalog.
  6. Transfer students who have successfully completed a college-level English and/or mathematics course are exempt from the academic placement (COMPASS) test. Students who have completed neither, or only one, of these college level courses will be required to take one or more parts of the COMPASS test. Transfer students whose ACT or SAT scores demonstrate appropriate levels may be exempt from parts of the COMPASS test. NOTE: Only ACT or SAT scores less than three years old as of the first day of the first term of enrollment will be used to determine exemption status.

D. International Students

International applicants who wish to earn a degree or certificate at Cleveland State must seek regular admission. To gain regular admission, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Submission of a completed application for admission.
  2. Payment of a $10.00 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Provide official copies of academic records from secondary schools, colleges or universities accompanied by notarized or certified English translations of these documents.
  4. All international applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 500 is required on the paper exam or 173 on the computerized exam. Official TOEFL scores must be submitted. Students may also satisfy this English proficiency requirement by submitting a transcript showing graduation from an American high school or another U.S. institution showing satisfactory completion of English composition.
  5. International applicants must show evidence of financial resources adequate for all expenses while enrolled at Cleveland State Community College. For the first year, international student fees are estimated to be approximately $13,100.00. This figure is only an estimate and is subject to change.
  6. International applicants should submit a certificate from a licensed physician or other qualified medical authority verifying freedom from tuberculosis.
  7. International students must become familiar with the regulations of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and assume responsibility for complying with these regulations.
  8. International students will be subject to the same policies regarding the academic placement (COMPASS) test as are transfer students.
  9. International students are required to have hospitalization insurance prior to completing registration. Students can either provide proof of adequate coverage or purchase coverage through the College, as provided by a private contractor.
